Materials List for Watercolor Workshop April 3, 2016
Catherine Hillis, WATERCOLOR SUPPLY LIST , www.catherinehillis.com
There is no substitute for good quality paper and paint. If you already own watercolor supplies, please bring what you have and purchase professional quality items as you progress.
A COMPLETE SUPPLY LIST IS ON MY WEBSITE, under “Classes and Workshops”
Paper: Arches, Artistico or Richeson, 140 lb, cold pressed. (Note: I won’t teach on Strathmore or Canson. It doesn’t absorb paint correctly.)
One good quality watercolor “block”140 lb (11” x 14” is a good size)
OR good quality paper and board with masking tape
Accessories: Water container, paper towels, pencil and kneaded eraser, a spray bottle for water, sketch book, hair dryer.
Palette: I like to use a large square or circular covered palette with wells around all sides, such as the Quiller Palette. You can also use a butcher’s tray or white ceramic or plastic plate.
Brushes: One medium round brush (#8, #9 or #10)
One 1” or 2” flat soft bristle wash brush
Any fine brushes that you like for detail work (riggers, or fine round tip brushes)
A soft 2” wash brush is nice to have.
Tubes of watercolor paint: Use professional grade paints such as Daniel Smith, Quiller, Winsor-Newton, Da Vinci, Holbein, Rembrandt, American Journey, etc. Buy good quality paints and paper and your product will be first rate! If you already own watercolors, bring what you have and you can fill in later. Feel free to buy a professional pan set; easy to pack.
BARE BONES COLORS (See my website for the full list)
Yellows: Aureolin Yellow, Burnt Sienna
Blues, Violets: Ultramarine Blue
Reds: Quinacridone Rose, Permanent Alizarin Crimson
