Catherine Hillis has painted all her life, winning hundreds of awards and honors regionally and nationally. She’s one of 40 elected members of the prestigious Washington Society of Landscape Painters in Washington, DC and has earned Signature Membership status from eight watercolor organizations across the country.
She regularly competes in national/international watercolor and plein aire competitions and recently won “Best in Show” at Piedmont Plein Air in High Point, NC, and “Honorable Mention” for her Quick Draw in the 2015 Curacao Plein Air. Other plein air awards include Ellicott City, MD, (Juror’s Choice Award, 2013), Mountain Maryland Plein Air in Cumberland, MD (Honorable Mention 2012 and Best Nocturnal 2014), and 2nd Place in Clifton, VA.
Hillis served as Artist in Residence in Dinan, France and at Hot Springs National Park. Publications include Plein Air Magazine, American Artist Magazine, “The Artistic Touch 5 and 6,” and Splash 12 and Splash 14, and “Best of American Watercolorists, 2007;” she garnered second place in watercolors in the book, “Best of Virginia Artists and Artisans, 2005;” and her biography has been included in “Who’s Who Among American Women” since 2006.
Catherine Hillis primarily paints in watercolors, including busy street scenes, coastal landscapes, and her favorite, the historic sites near her home on the Blue Ridge in Virginia. The hallmarks of her work are the effects of light and movement, with a touch of humor.
